PDP CLINICIANS

DESCRIPTION OF PROGAM

Fall 2010 PDP Clinician Manual

The Player Development Program (PDP) for 1st graders often is the first exposure players and parents have to MSI’s programs. It often represents a child’s first experience of any sort with organized sports programs. A young child's experience with PDP can do a lot to determine a child's attitude toward MSI, playing soccer, and team sports in general.

One of MSI’s key ingredients for a successful Player Development Program is the PDP Clinician, a person in 7th grade or older who enthusiastically teaches the game to a new generation of players. PDP Clinicians who have accepted a work assignment for a given Saturday take responsibility for leading three to four hour-long clinics/scrimmages for 3-4 different 1st grade teams. During the first three weeks of each soccer season, there is a clinic portion at the beginning of each hour-long session. For the first half hour of the first three sessions for a team, PDP Clinicians demonstrate the skill of the day (i.e., dribbling, passing, etc.) and help a team’s players learn the skill through the use of fun activities. During the last half hour of each hour-long session during the first three weeks and for the full hour the last five weeks, PDP Clinicians facilitate 4 v 4 scrimmages. The 4 v 4 scrimmages provide players maximum opportunity to apply the skills they are taught by PDP Clinicians during the first three weeks and refine over the course of the entire season with their coaches.

Before each season, persons wishing to become PDP Clinicians for the upcoming season must apply and register for a mandatory training class (see below). Returning Clinicians attend a 45 minute refresher training class. New Clinicians attend a 1.5 hour training class. In addition, each of the first three Saturdays, starting approximately 45 minutes before a clinician’s first session, MSI provides refresher training for the clinicians on that day’s lesson. PDP Clinicians are paid $8.00/hour for the first 28 hours they work over the course of one or more seasons; after the first 28 hours, PDP clinicians are paid $9.00/hour. (Please note: PDP Clinicians do not have to accept work assignments every Saturday to work in the program, although working many Saturdays is desirable. However, clinicians who do not attend a mandatory pre-season training class and do not accept at least one 3-4 hour shift during the first three weeks of a season will not be scheduled for any subsequent sessions.)

Being a PDP Clinician is a lot of responsibility and it is also a lot of fun. It provides a great chance for high school students to earn money (or community service credits) doing something they enjoy. It also is a great way to develop self-confidence and leadership skills.

MSI is very grateful to our PDP Clinicians; we couldn’t run the Player Development Program without them. If you have questions, contact us at msi@msisoccer.org.
